WHAT ARE VEGAN COSMETICS?

We have to start by differentiating between vegetarian and vegan.

Vegetarian refers to someone who never eats any type of meat, poultry, sellfish, caviar… In other words: they only consume products that come from plants, seeds, etc.

Vegan, in cosmetics, defines a product that does not contain any ingredient, or derivatives, of animal origin in any of its manufacturing processes.

Although the European regulation of 2013 has established the prohibition of testing cosmetic products on animals, we cannot say that it is associated with veganism. The certification that guarantees a product is not tested on animals is called cruelty free.

Here are some examples of ingredients that would not be vegan: milk, honey, eggs, propolis, fish or shellfish extracts, animal fats (pork, cow, etc.), oil of animal origin (turtle , whale, etc.).

We can recognize a vegan product by looking at its label, which includes the INCI (list of ingredients that the product is made of), and verifying that there are no ingredients of animal origin. As it is often difficult to know all the elements of a formula, brands choose to include a logo that certifies that the product is totally vegan.

WHAT ARE NATURAL COSMETICS?

When speaking about natural cosmetics, we are referencing products that are created with organic ingredients: natural cosmetics products do not contain any type of chemical or toxic agents.

Any product with a high percentage of ingredients of animal origin (and this percentage is shown on the label) must comply with several specific regulations to be considered a natural cosmetics product. The regulation that ensures the veracity of the name “natural cosmetics” is ensured by independent organizations present in each country.

In this way, we can say that natural cosmetics are beneficial for the following reasons:

  • Natural cosmetic products are products without parabens or other types of chemicals or toxins, so they do not harm our body.
  • Natural cosmetic products are suitable for all skin types. These products are suitable for all skin types, so those with skin problems can also use them without problems.
  • Natural cosmetic products are cruelty free: they are not tested on animals.
  • Cosmetic products with ingredients of natural origin can also be vegan products and have an ecological certification that ensures they also respect the environment.
